YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IS YOUR MENTAL WEALTH by Kim Eugene
HELP STOP THE STIGMA BY SPREADING AWARENESS.
TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES TO BE MORE AWARE.
As a result of the stigma, many employees suffer in silence, often for fear that their reputation, relationships, or job status could be in jeopardy if they disclose they’re struggling with their mental health or have a mental health condition. This can worsen their symptoms and make them less likely to take steps to support their mental health, seek resources or treatment, or recover. In addition the fear that they will be unfairly judged and that private and confidential information will be disclosed to others is one of the main if not most significant reason an employee will not seek redress.
- According to research One in five people worldwide experience a mental health disorder each year, yet eight out of 10 won’t reach out for support, largely because of mental health stigma. The stigma of mental illness isn’t just an individual problem; it’s a global issue.
- The former U.S. Surgeon General indicated that, “Stigma is the biggest killer out there. Stigma kills more people than cigarettes, than heroin, than any other risk factor. Because it keeps people in the shadows, it keeps people from asking for help, it keeps good people from being willing to offer help.”
- According to a Cigna’s Loneliness Index, Absenteeism driven by stress and loneliness costs employers over $154 billion each year.
Mental Health Day
Mental Health Day provides us with an enormous opportunity to reflect on our own emotional and mental health. It allows us to focus on the importance of building awareness, having the difficult conversations, but most importantly it encourages us to take proactive steps and measures to sustain good mental health practices. This includes but not limited to, practicing self-care, self-love, and stress management activities, speaking to a life coach or therapist.
